Killylea Methodist

Main Street, Killylea BT60 4LP

The church meets on the last Sunday of each month at midday for worship but is so much more than that. There is a vibrant youth group meeting in the church halls on a Friday evening, and the church is still an integral part of village life. Special services are held in the church on Good Friday evening (Tenebrae), Christmas Eve midnight service, and November and December when there is a special Christmas festival.

History

Killylea church is described as

'a centre of blessing during the 1859 revival.'

(Armagh Circuit Yearbook 1958).

From this spiritual outpouring during the 1859 revival, a group of friends met in Killylea as a small Methodist society. In the mid 19th century, work commenced through house meetings and then in a barn in Killylea, but this was not always available, so the friends decided to seek permanent premises for use as a church.

A house was purchased in 1861 for Gospel services and prayer, eventually this was replaced with a new church, officially opened on 15 October 1903.

Killylea congregation faithfully continues the 'work of God' in the area. The congregation have added an additional building with a hall, kitchen and toilets, providing more opportunities for work with young people and to generally enhance the fellowship.
