Mission

Family and friends both near and far are welcomed to Killymaddy Mission Hall, in rural County Armagh.

Regular monthly services are held on the first Sunday of each month at 3pm, along with special Gospel meetings and concerts.

History

Local Methodists and friends in the Killymaddy area (about 5 miles from Armagh city) decided, with the support of the Armagh Circuit, to build a Mission Hall. They had for a long time felt the need for a building to 'conduct their Sunday School, prayer meetings, and evangelistic services.'

The site for the Hall 'was given free by the tenant, Mr Moses Frazer, while the landlord, Mr Hassard, also acted generously.' The Hall was designed by Mr James Whimster of Armagh and the contractor was Mr Fowler of Portadown. The cost was £250 and had a seating capacity of about 200.

When it was built, the Hall was '40 feet long by twenty feet wide and fifteen feet high to ceiling. It is lighted by three Gothic windows on each side, and a beautiful rose window over the platform. The windows are filled with leaded lights in coloured glass of chaste designs. The ceiling is panelled in varnished wood.'

At the first of the opening services, held at 6pm on Thursday evening 20 February 1896, tributes were paid to the support from the neighbourhood.

The preacher was Rev Edward Hazelton of Sandy Row, Belfast and Rev R Cole, Thomas Salter and William Mearn also took part in the service. Rev Hazelton chose Luke chapter 14 and verse 23 for his text.

Rev William Maguire or Portadown conducted the second service that evening, preaching on Acts chapter 4 verses 29 to 30.

Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Luke 14:23 KJV

Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.
Acts 4:29-30 NKJV
